Ok, so maybe it won’t really be a “throw down” per se, but there will surely be some serious riding in the Utah desert next week–maybe an elbow or two, but surely nothing more. I, for one am so stoked for this trip. It’s the first time the TrailCrew has ridden together and I think we’re all pretty psyched to ride as a group on some crazy-fun singletrack and slickrock…Utah-Style.
I think I can speak for all of us in the colder climes, that we’re looking WAY forward to some short-sleeve jersey riding–it’s supposed to be in the 70s. While I love my new Rapha jacket and all, but I’m OVER the cold. The past three days here in Boulder it’s ...

In a bit more than a week the TrailCrew is heading to Vegas for an awesome weekend of riding. I’m pretty sure I’m going to die on the ride. Here’s why:
This is about the closest I’ve been to a bike in the last three months. There’s not only a bike behind me, but one on my shirt as well. I am hardcore.
Okay, that’s not entirely true, I’ve been riding my fixie to the coffee shop to work when I’m home and I did ride my road bike a few times (especially the day I put the tire-sealant in the tubeless tires in order to spread out the goop.) And I took Stumpy out for a quick shakedown ride. But somehow ...

Sunday night Captain Slow and I headed out for a spin around the local. The mountain biking gods decided it wasn’t our day. We managed 3 punctures between the 2 of us and a few minor offs for the Slow man. Was probably the slowest ride I have done for a long time.
I threw the GoPro on my seat post rear facing thinking the result wouldn’t be awesome, but to my surprise it turned out great. These cameras are just awesome.
The first part of this footage is on a no name trail that I call “Parallel Single” and managed a huge pinch flat off a rock half way down (not that you can tell in the video). The second part ...

This is an altered version of an article I wrote a bit ago after the VN Buyer’s Guide was published. I think it’s pretty timely though…
It Is About the Bike
The essence of the Buyer’s Guide at VeloNews is to celebrate the creativity, the ingenuity, and the artistry of cycling’s innovators. Much like Christmas though, I think we tend to get so caught up in the buying that we forget the spirit. Yes, indeed, let’s celebrate the $6,000 wheels and the $9,000 mountain bikes, but let’s not forget the very essence of the bicycle itself—the ultimate potential that it has, and what it brings to literally tens of millions of people around the globe—and what, in its simplest form, it can ...

Grimo recently bought a Oregon ATC5K helmet cam so we thought we’d try some dual camera picture in picture shenanigans. This is our first attempt up a short single trail called “Shelob’s Revenge”, it’s a blast to bomb down but equally enjoyable to climb.
(iMovie only allows the same aspect ratio of the smaller video as the main video when doing picture in picture. Hence it chopped off the top section of the ATC5K’s 4:3 footage)

If you’re at SXSW, you can meet up with me and with Tan, the man behind @iamspecialized. We’re both here, we’re both going to be at the Bike Hugger Mobile Social today.
And I’m going to be giving out great schwag at the party, like these killer t-shirts

Here’s another video for y’all. I thought I would have a crack with the GoPro mounted on the helmet. It certainly gives it a different perspective than that when mounted to the frame. This is our local trail called “Terminated”. As you can tell from the camera movement it’s pretty rocky and rough with a number of fun off camber sections.
I’m already plotting my next angle, if I can pull it off it will be be wicked. I hope.

This is a start to finish cam vid of our local downhill track “No More Secrets”. This is the original line which has since been modified a little to take out the pedally section at the top. The Stumpy is currently getting packaged up to be sent for the first SJTC tour in the US so time to bring out the Enduro and have a crack. It had been raining heavily for 3 days so I held back a lot not knowing what was rutted out and I hadn’t ridden the trail for a while. The cool change and rain was a lovely change from the dry heat and dusty trails, you can feel the very start of Autumn coming. ...

…I went to work late and got another ride in before we get more snow!
Here in Bozeman many things are quite a bit more laid back than in the rest of the country, especially when it comes to skiing. A significant part of the local population chooses to live here for what we have in the winter: a great local ski area and (usually) deep powder. In fact, many business and professors at MSU have a variation on the 10 inch rule- if more than 10 inches of snow falls, they won’t be surprised to not see their staff at work or class in the morning.
I’m not a particularly good skier, and I haven’t even gone this year- mostly because ...

Google has rolled out their bicycle version of Google Maps. It’s pretty slick, with the ability to map routes on trails and paths. It covers dozens of cities across the US (with other countries coming down the pike). Here’s my coverage of it on Bike Hugger.
